More tourist come to Cuba

The number of tourist arrivals in Cuba grew over 20 percent in March compared to the same month the year before. Evidence of this assertion is seen in Old Havana hotels run by Habaguanex Corp. and juicy earnings in Varadero, the island nation's premiere sun-and-beach destination.

This trend has made Cuba's top tourist circuits in Varadero, Jardines del Rey, Ciego de Avila's northern keys and Holguin post record highs in the number of overnight travelers, officials from the Ministry of Tourism told Caribbean News Digital.

Nationwide, occupancy estimates and actual rates for April and May continue looking good, although the same sources warned everything hinges on how the international situation would unfold.

Habaguanex S.A. is ready to open the 25-room Raquel Hotel this year- is chalking up a 92 percent occupancy rate throughout March, thus leaving behind 85 and 86 percent rates in January and February, respectively.

According to Tannya Sibori, marketing manageress for Habaguanex, this month has traditionally been high for the company's demands since its foundation back in 1994. Habaguanex is currently running 15 hotels and hostels with 413 rooms tallied in all.

Founded with a view to highlight the historic values of Old Havana in the face of tourism, Habaguanex counts on a network of 156 facilities ranging from lodgings, hostels, stores, bars and restaurants usually packed with travelers hailing from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy.

For its part, Varadero ratcheted up a record-breaking $100 million in just the two months of the year.

Projections have it that the archipelago could nick 1.9 million tourists until December for a 12.7 percent overall raise.

According to experts, authorities are determined to increase efficiency levels without slashing prices or making a dent in services and the quality of the tourist product.

Incremento sustancial de turistas canadienses a Cuba

Más de 129 500 turistas procedentes de Canadá llegaron en los dos primeros meses del 2003 a Cuba, cifra que representa un crecimiento del 69.6% en relación con similar período del año anterior, muestran cifras de la Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas (ONE).

Sólo en febrero último, 67 795 canadienses visitaron la isla, lo cual representó un incremento del 57.8% en comparación con igual mes del 2002, destacó la ONE, que al mismo tiempo señaló que el acumulado del primer bimestre mejora también en mucho los resultados del emisor canadiense en el 2001, cuando arribaron al país cerca de 102 000 visitantes de esa nacionalidad.

De este modo, en enero y febrero últimos la cuota de participación del mercado canadiense fue de alrededor de un tercio de los casi 382 000 viajeros llegados al archipiélago cubano y que significaron un aumento de más del 26% frente a similar etapa del año anterior.

Otros emisores que lograron un buen desenvolvimiento en el comienzo del 2003 fueron Italia y Francia, cuyos volúmenes de viajeros crecieron el 25.7 y el 24.1%, respectivamente, mientras Alemania y México acrecentaron su emisión en 11 y 8.7%, en ese mismo orden.
