Castro’s Defining Crisis

On this fiftieth anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the man who was its catalyst, Fidel Castro, is eighty-six years old, his state of mortality the topic of fervid gossip and speculation. There have been reports of Castro’s demise before, most notably in 2006 when he with fell ill with diverticulitis following a trip to Argentina with his friend and protégé President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela and disappeared from view for weeks. Members of Miami’s Cuban-American exile community celebrated publicly, only to be brought up short when proof of his “biological existence” was eventually released.
